F.A.N. Discussion Forum > Safety of children's fluoride vitamins?

My pediatrician and dentist are really pushing me to give my children fluoride vitamins. After researching fluoride, I'm worried. Any medical rsch. on this?? Any studies to indicate potential risks to NOT using these fluoride vitamins? Our drinking water does not contain fluoride. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. I have a 5 year old and 2 year old twins.

Fluoride is not a vitamin. Its not even classified as an essential nutrient. Your dentist and doctor should be ashamed in my humble opinion. Make sure your child has a balanced healthy diet. Aviod junk foods and fizzy drinks, and supervise the cleaning of your childs teeth.

All the best

To learn more about why fluoride supplements are a bad idea (e.g. fluoride doesn't work when swallowed, and supplements put a child at high risk for dental fluorosis) see:

Just say no! My children (Now ages 23 and 26) where given the vitamins some 15 to 20 years ago for about 2 months. WHen I went back to renew the prescription, Dr. Ken Costa of Dunellen NJ did not renew it saying they did not carry it any longer. With flouride being associated with so many illnesses, it makes me wonder if my sons Type 1 diabetes could have been caused by flouride vitamins or flouride in the water.

Thank you all so very much for responding. My oldest child has very bad teeth --16 cavities already and he's only 5, despite good brushing 2x/day. Dentist and pediatrician are really pushing the fluoride vitamins. I've always felt uncomfortable and rarely gave it to him and my other children. I'm going to show them both this research. Much, much appreciated.
