Many people say that the Nazis used fluoride in the concentration camps to make the prisoners "docile". Is there any truth to this?

Here's Fluoride Action Network's response to this oft-cited "urban legend":

In the 1950's and 1960's the rational scientific and ethical arguments used by the late Dr. Geoge Waldbott and Nobel laureates like Dr. Fred Sumner, were drowned out by those who insisted that fluoridation was a communist plot. The promoters gleefully exploited these theories to discredit all opponents of fluoridation. In this they were ably assisted by the "father of public relations" Edward Bernays and perhaps unwittingly by Stanley Kubrick in his film Dr. Strangelove.

Today's equivalent is the claim that Hitler used fluoride to suppress prisoners in concentration camps and Stalin did the same in his gulag camps. There is no valid historic documentation to substantiate these claims as being true. Instead, the "evidence" proffered to support the Hitler and Stalin claims are testimonials from people who claim they heard it was happening. Such hearsay evidence would never pass muster in court or with a good historian if they were not accompanied by primary historical documents that independently verify the claim. There is no shortage of documents from the Nazi regime. Nowhere in these documents, however, is there any mention of fluoride being used in concentration camps.

Thus, in contrast to the voluminous documentation, which establishes that there was an extensive collusion between US Government agencies and US industries in promoting fluoridation in the early days of the practice (as brought to light by investigative journalist Chris Bryson in his brilliant expose The Fluoride Deception), there is no such documentation for the Hitler/Stalin claims. Not only are the Hitler/Stalin claims almost certainly false, but they carry a risk of sabotaging our efforts at a time when we can see victory in our sights. Let us explain why.

1) The science on fluoride's ineffectiveness and dangers is well and truly on our side. Our task is to get more and more journalists and professionals to see this. The other side would dearly wish to distract them away from the NRC (2006) review; the Bassin (2006) study on osteosarcoma; the Scientific American January 2008 issue; the over 40 animal studies which indicate that fluoride damages the brain and the nearly 20 human studies which indicate that it lowers IQ in children. They would also like to keep dentists, doctors, and others away from the accumulating evidence that there is no or very little difference in tooth decay (especially in the permanent teeth) between fluoridated and non fluoridated communities, states and countries. The only hope that the proponents have of prolonging this practice is to keep independent scientists, doctors and dentists away from examining this issue: nothing would more effectively do this than the suspicion that those opposed to fluoridation were nutcases.

2) In addition, people should put themselves in the shoes of a dentist or a doctor who truly believes this practice is doing good. It is highly insulting for them to be portrayed as being part of some gigantic conspiracy theory to dumb down the American population. We need these people to change their minds and this is the very last way to do that. 3) Third, think of what it means to the professionals who have joined our ranks (and often at some personal and professional cost) to have their friends and colleagues point to some of these vitriolic videotapes on YouTube which espouse these extreme conspiracy theories. For example, here is an email we received today from one of the most important professionals opposed to fluoridation. The website in question is a YouTube video that was mistakenly believed to be produced by FAN:

Dear Paul:

Something strange happened to me. xxx approached me in the parking lot and told me that 'my' website had something on it that really offended members in his family (he was not complaining to me officially but personally). His wife sits on some kind of committee tracking hate literature (I'm assuming against Jews). He did mention that the link on 'my' website showed something really offensive to Jews regarding the holocaust.

I assured him I did not have any personal website.

He then sent me this link ... I have to tell you Paul that it is scary to be associated with this kind of stuff.... I don't want to be linked to this crap.

So there we have it. Not only are the conspiracy theories about Hitler and Stalin unsupported by facts, but they undermine the credibility of those who work to educate the public about the real problems with fluoride and fluoridation.

For these reasons, we strongly encourage people to keep the focus of the discussion on the documented problems with fluoride. With so many valid reasons to oppose fluoridation, why hurt our cause by relying on imaginary ones?

It is a matter of record that sodium fluoride has been used for behaviour control of populations.

In an "Address in Reply to the Governor's Speech to Parliament", Mr. Harley Rivers Dickinson, Liberal Party Member of the Victorian Parliament for South Barwon, Australia [In Australia, parliamentarian Mr. Harley Dickenson raised the issue in the Victorian Legislative council, which is recorded in the official Hansard report on August 12th, 1987] made a statement on the historical use of fluorides for behaviour control.

Mr. Dickinson reveals that,

"At the end of the Second World War, the United States Government sent Charles Elliot Perkins, a research worker in chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pathology, to take charge of the vast Farben chemical plants in Germany. While there, he was told by German chemists of a scheme which had been worked out by them during the war and adopted by the German General Staff.

"This scheme was to control the population in any given area through mass medication of drinking water. In this scheme, sodium fluoride occupied a prominent place.

"Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual's power to resist domination by slowly poisoning and narcotising a certain area of the brain, and will thus make him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him.

"Both the Germans and the Russians added fluoride to the drinking water of prisoners of war to make them stupid and docile."

It is interesting that Dr. George Estabrooks, an advisor to the United States Government on hypnotism and psychological behaviour control, later became chairman of the Department of Psychology at Colgate University. Internationally, Colgate was and remains today the most ardent producer and advocate for fluoridated toothpaste. The use of chemicals by the government to modify behaviour of select population groups is not new. During the first two World Wars, bromides were administered to service men to dim the libido in an attempt to inhibit forays into local bordellos.

As noted above, the problem with the evidence-base on this issue, is that it all comes down to hearsay evidence (e.g. what perkins says he heard from some chemists at the company). However, unless such claims are independently verified by hard documents, it can not be considered factual.

One question to ask yourself is this: The Nazis were well known to meticulously document all of their activities. Why then is there no documents from the Nazis showing that they used fluoride? Until such documents are found or identified, this theory should be considered unverified hearsay.

It is good to see interest building in the fluoride issue. The number of videos coming up on a google search is increasing and many seem positive to the cause. Some seem a little pointless or offensive such as the concentration camp one. We have no control over this in a free society. This will be used against anti fluoridation people maybe. Could the FAN maybe come up with some sort of a prescreeing guide or rate some of them. In looking myself many are just new postings of favorites but some seem to be promo songs for bands.Some seem to be pushing something else. We need a short cut to get at growing number of excellent videos. Some aim at Humor like the Major Rudy which covers lots of issues.

Maybe someone out there has a good handle on the fluoride videos already? Would like to hear about it. Some of the public forum stuff is beyond my ability to pick out voices from too much noise.as the numbers go up this could get overwelming. We could also get a youtube hit sooner or later.

America sent rat poison to Stalin's Siberian prisoners, via Lend-Lease: Russia's use of sodium fluoride during World War II was entered into the Congressional Record in the early 1950's.

USAF Major George R. Jordan testified before Un-American Activity committees of Congress that he had been stationed in Great Falls, Montana during the war as a U.S.-Soviet liaison officer. Major Jordan stated that one of his tasks had been to procure "vast quantities" of sodium fluoride for shipment to Siberia via numerous Lend-Lease airplanes which we were sending to Russia from Montana, via Canada and Alaska. (7,926 airplanes were sent to Russia via this route.)

Major Jordan testified that the Russians openly admitted to "... using the fluoride in the water supplies in their concentration camps, to make the prisoners stupid, docile, and subservient."

In short, it is NOT an urban legend.
Fluoride Action Network only hurts its credibility by shying away from evidence that sounds too "conspiracy".
We must consider ALL the evidence, regardless of our preconcieved notions.

I totally agree with views of FAN. We have to use scientific evidence that can be proven. God knows, there is enough of it.

As well as heresay evidence,there is no mention of dosage. Was it 4 ppm or was it 50 ppm.

We need researcher and scientist to present our material to give some recognition to the danger of water fluoridation.

I consider myself as a "foot soldier" in our campaign (I don't have a degree). I play a vital roll in the scheme of things, because I have contact with the ordinary people in the street and the more ordinary people we bring to our fold, the more voting power we have.

This is the other string to the bow, when politicians are worried about voting power, they also start to take notice.

I AM AGAINST WATER FLUORIDATION AND I VOTE.

Does Ray, or anyone else know, if the testimony, as described by Ray, of USAF Major Jordon exists, how can we obtain it?

Do the documents show, the amount of sodium fluoride dosage, that was being used on the prisoners?

Thank you for your comments Ray. However, the evidence you cite is, again, hearsay evidence. It is some person speaking at a hearing. FAN will continue to consider this theory untrue until someone can provide ANY hard documentation to prove it. If what the USAF Major was saying is true, there should be a paper trail to prove it.

This is particularly true in the case of the Nazis who DOCUMENTED EVERYTHING! Why then -- if the Nazis described in meticulous detail the operations of the concentration camps -- why has no document ever surfaced showing that fluoride was added to the water? It defies reality to believe that such information would not already have been found by the thousands of Holocaust researchers who have intensely studied the issue.

In short, this theory will remain an urban legend as long as there is no documented verification of the hearsay claims made by person X and Y from the 1940s and early 1950s.

Finally, if you want to consider conspiracy theories, here's one to consider: was this theory about mind control and communist conspiracies purposely injected into the debate about fluoridation as a way of discrediting the opposition?

As one who has participated recently in a few recent local Community Water Fluoridation (CWF) battles I can attest to the wisdom of not giving CWF proponents any less documented or sensational information to pounce upon. By staying on the track of presenting the best and most recent science we can avoid much ridicule and many smearmongering derailments.
Within the last few weeks, local CWF proponents have used smear-through-association Dr. Strangelove comments in public, and attempted to make our side look ludicrous by associating us with the nazi mind control premise.
FAN has fought an enormous uphill struggle against entrenched powers who love to discredit. I respect their right to focus on science and not information that is less verifiable.
Having said that, here is a Major Jordan speech from the fifties ( http://www.sweetliberty.org/issues/health/flouride.html) that will link you to the printed by the John Birch Society "Major Jordan's Diary". As was suggested in the last FAN response, the Sweet Liberty site host suggests the JBS society was a front organization. Despite his being a questionable source,the Major Jordan speech actually has some good perspective on the struggle in the fifties against CWF.

The Prima facie evidence for fluoride use in concentration camps may, technically, be considered "hearsay" however, when seen in a historical context, it is quite strong. Prozac aka Fluoxetine hydrochloride, is a pharmaceutical product intended to make people feel "everything is ok" without concern for their true condition. Often disturbing thoughts of concerns about war and other depressing social conditions are suppressed by the fluoride containing Prozac..

Instead of activism and action for positive social change for betterment of social conditions, the fluoride/Prozac effect causes sedentary apathy and a zombie-like stupor that prevents action/betterment of social condition..
